Longs hours at work is a form of laziness
Here's the thing - I'm absolutely an Type A personality who despises inefficiency and hates laziness. So the idea of working less is naturally repellent to me. At least until I read Tim Ferris' 4 Hour Work Week and started listening to some of the smartest minds in innovation and business like Seth Godin or Ben Cassochia. The catchphrase of "work smarter, not harder" is so cliche that it's lost its value, but the underlying point remains the same. That's why when I came across this article in Quartz about men's peer-driven need to appear like they work harder than anyone else, it further reinforced my appreciation that people who work late until the night are NOT working smarter, let alone actually working at all. When conditions are an office are such that people feel obligated to stay late to make it appear like they're being the most productive, you clearly have a serious cultural issue. Failure on the leaders to not force people to go home (themselves included) and to not make it clear that people should stop themselves once their productivity diminishes. Failure on individuals to not have the discipline necessary to call it a day, or have the cojones to actually leave and not fear that they are being judged. This is a form of laziness - rather than apply the necessary examination of their efforts or the ensure they are taking care of themselves for the long run, they are just defaulting to an automated mode of "must work long no matter what so I appear valuable." Laziness. Unacceptable.
